The entries judged based on the criteria as following:
How well does a fanart tell a story and how big
of a story? For examples: What's going on in this fanart? What is the characters
doing in this fanart? Best stories fanarts are which the readers/viewers
are able to figure out the stories behind them based on the clues given
in the fanarts (good titles also help).
The winners are determined by how many picks the fanart earned from the judges.
1st Place:
Chrissy's (dbz1fanforever@yahoo.com),
SailorMoon:
It's a Girl! , picked by 5 out of 9 Judges
Despite the 3D persepective problems as well as
lack of colors, this one tells a great deal about the rewarding consequence
of the hard-won love between Mamoru and Usagi.
2nd Place:
Soledad,(email: sailor_soledad@yahoo.com.ar),
SailorMoon:
Don't Dream........It's Over. . picked by 4 out of 9 Judges.
A rose, a tear, and Mamoru and Usagi as a couple
are all it takes to tell a heartbroken story of Rei Hino.
3rd Place:
PC (pcfey@sbcglobal.net).
SailorMoon: Tsumani
Trouble! picked by 3 out of 9 Judges.
Great persepective and how it shows that tsumuni
can be quite scary to experience.
The picks & comments by judges are posted at the bottom of this page just below the list of Entries. Congratulations to the winners and big thanks to anyone for entering the contest!
JA's Comments: The Storied Fanart Contest is obviously hardest and most misunderstood? one I have hosted and what makes this contest so differnet from many "best drawn fanart" contests out there is that it directly tests the artists' creativity (and originality) meaning how well can they tell the stories thru their fanarts regardless of their drawing skills. The common problem among many fanarts show the characters just standing there as if in front of the camera (persecpetive problems). I wasn't surprised if there are some problems with the judging system (voting process also have problems too). I wasn't one of the judges because of the fact that I helped with the titles of some entries. Based on the helpful criticisms from others as well as re-reviewing the submission rules, I think I may be not clear on what I expect from any fanart entries, so I'm getting ideas on what I can do better on any future contests. I think it might be better to go with the "Humor" and "Mini-Manga" contests since those two are lot easier and more successful (and my favorites too). The picks and comments by the judges are posted below the list of entries and I'm awaiting the permissions from the rest of 9 judges to post their comments and emails addresses.

Judge #1 .Death Soldier" dark_figure@hotmail.com
I found ChibiJennifer's [SailorMoon: The Heart Crystal
of Sailor Moon] strikingly effective, both visually and storywise. Straight
away I am reminded of the breathtaking battle against Mistress9, followed
by Pharoah90. Super SailorMoon remained determined as shown in her facial
expression, facing head on with Pharoah90 (cleverly represented by the
red figure) not a thought of fear in her mind. This can be seen by her
eyes as they almost don't have consciousness. I think there is more than
enough hinted in this image to tell us the story. The butterflies and the
heart crystal represent her power, but she isn't on this battle alone.
In the background, a purple ring of light can be seen, and this shows that
indeed, Sailor Saturn is present within the dark barrier they had entered.
I think that the background works here, since they are inside the dark
barrier, as oppose to the artist not being able to draw backgrounds (I
assume) Great effort, great detail, lots of thought put into meaning and
composition.
Digilee's [SailorMoon: Have Mercy on Thy Soul (During
the War with Black Moon)(] I think this was the next to stand out since
the choice of character is interesting (a villain) and this image seems
to create a history, story on its own. From the title, it says "During
the War with Black Moon" and this makes sense in this artwork, since we
see the inner senshi's power glow around Crystal Tokyo, which is what happened
during the battle. Those "wanted" posters hint to us that the Black Moon
force want to rid the Queen. The only part I'm confused about is "Have
Mercy on Thy Soul", it seems to be referring to Catzy, yet why is she seemingly
guilty? I thought she only regretted the past once she was healed by Sailor
Moon... so at this point she still should have been evil? Nevertheless,
I think this piece is still something...
White Magician Girl [SailorMoon: Never Stopped Thinking
of You] I think the next choice followed by the previous two would be this
one. This one is calm, simple idea but gets the story across I think. Seiya
is sitting outside in a quiet place at night, looking up into the stars
to see Usagi's face. It is likely Seiya couldn't sleep, referring to the
title "Never Stopped Thinking of You", as he is in Pyjamas, he was most
likely in bed previously. I don't think I have to say anymore, since it
clearly shows how much Usgai means to him.. if he can see Usagi's face
made up of the stars in the sky, then love is blind..

Judge #3 Richard W. (richardwallberg@bellsouth.net)
-Chrissy's It's a Girl! Well I thought that "It's a girl!" while
lacking color told a lot through the setting and in details like the little
bunnies on the blanket around Chibi-Usa.
-In "Tsunami Trouble" I loved the contrast between everyone else's
reaction compared to Usagi and Chibi-Usas' who are more focused on each
other.
- In "Last Days of the Silver Millennium" I liked how the artist keep
each couple on eye level with their partner, you can just feel the love
between them.

Judge #5 Kitty (permission denied)
-"Don't Dream...It's Over" You can feel the pain Rei has in this
image. The black and white gives extra feel to the image. She's holding
close to what shall fade away: a rose. It was not meant to be indeed...
-"It's a Girl!" You can not only see what is happening, but you
can also see what happened before, and what shall happen! This simple image
has a huge story written around it, and the moment was captured wonderfully!
-"Another Distraction": It made me feel "So Usagi". It
could indeed be something Usagi would do! Perhaps not on the way to battle,
but perhaps on the way back!
Soledad:.SailorMoon: Don't Dream........It's Over.
Alexis: SailorMoon: Another Distraction..

Janice, FullMetal Alchemists: Denied!
Chrissy, SailorMoon: It's a Girl!
SailorMoonFreak, SailorMoon: Trying on a New Dress
Janice, FullMetal Alchemists: Denied! Love
the expression of Edward, he's clearly annoyed by his shortness. And we
know him, he's NOT going to ride some cheesy merry-go-round with 5-year-old
kids.. Poor Edward. The story behind the fanart is simple, but effective.
The title 'Denied!' works. The vision clearly zooms into Edwards mind,
and with that strong expression, there is no need complicate details, just
perfectly everything (notice the funny stick figures in background). Love
it. Janice, keep up the good work! The only problem would be that some
people don't know anything about FullMetal Alchemists or Edward Elric,
this is basically Sailor Moon-based website after all.
Chrissy: SailorMoon: It's a Girl!
There's very calm mood in this art, you can feel the warm happiness of
Usagi and Mamoru as new, proud parents. I was pleased with tiny details
Chrissy added, tiny bunnies in baby blanket, Usagi without the odangos/meatballs,
cresent moon in her forehead.. Most of all; a happy fanart without the
forcely added 'goofy humor'. I hoped use of thinner pencils, because some
small details seem to disappear due to use of thick pencil.. But congratulations,
Chrissy, you got my voice!
SailorMoonFreak: SailorMoon: Trying on a New
Dress.
Once again, it's hard to be shorty. Usagi would
do anything to make the beautiful, poofy dress fit. Oh, Usako, will you
ever learn? ^^ But I guess Usagi just can't really afford to take the dress
to tailor.. Mother Ikuko isn't happy that her daughter spends more time
on playing videogames than doing her school-work well. She possibly uses
every coin she found for buying mangas and videogames. 'Better do it myself'
Usagi thinks. Colors are bright and rich, idea is simple and cute. I hoped
little more length to Usagis body, but that's not so serious. Good work,
SailorMoonFreak!

Judge #8 Lena, (lena_dublin@hotmail.com)
-Entry 22. A: SailorMoon: It's a Girl! This fan-art really appeals
to me. Mostly because of the overall atmosphere in the image, it's sort
of serene and happy. I really like the expression on Usagi's face. It is,
of course, easy to tell the story behind this one. And this is a very interesting
and creative idea, I haven't seen anyone else use this concept before.
-Entry 06. A: Tsunami Trouble! It's very vibrant, got a great perspective
and you can make out what happened the moment before. The expressions are
great and the idea is well executed. Overall a fun fan-art.
-Entry 17. B: Sailor Moon Protecting Crystal Tokyo You can see the
resolve in Sailor Moon's face, and it's easy to tell that she is determined
to win this battle against her enemy. The butterflies that are streaming
out from the castle is a nice effect. I like the feeling of determination
that this image gives.
I'm sorry to all of you who didn't get a vote, it was a very
hard desicion to make and I wish I could've voted for more artists. But
this is a contest, and there can only be one winner (sad, but true). But
I hope you had fun making these either way.
