    Originally called "Hauser's Hole", the "Potato Patch" digging for the thundereggs was described to be like digging for potatos. Joel Hauser's father first noticed the thundereggs as he took his usual freight routes to the west in the 1920s. Guided by his father, Joel did some digging in that area in 1930s. The reports of his finds eventually sparked the decades worth of rockhounding activity. Even with those decades of activity, I'm surprised that I still find the thundereggs there. There are several lobes of thundereggs in the vicinity of Potato Patch area and they're not quite identical.  Paul "Geodekid" Calburn had that site be bulldozed few times to expose the thundereggs.
  The first diggings in the greenish weathered perlite/tuff bed along a ridge to the west of the road produces the greenish-skinned thundereggs that are mostly geode type, Some thundereggs are found with white to dark gray banded and "waterline" agates. Few pink to lavender agates had been found. Since this place had so many visits, it's becoming difficult to grain an access to the clusters of thundereggs and made harder by all of the thick tailings left by people in the past. I wasted three hours digging to get to the virgin parts only to find that someone already dug there and left behind a bunch of hammered broken duds buried in there. I had to dig at least 5 feet at a different spot to expose a virgin part down there and found some thundereggs but not many. The area could use another dose of bulldozer.
