The
Hidden Saddle refers to the fact that the weathered
perlite bed is located on the "saddle" between the high
points of a ravine hidden from the parking area. It can
be reached only by hiking to it (ignore the first
diggings). It was obvious that the people did find some
thundereggs with something in them from there and my
first impression wasn't good. Even so, I found some
thundereggs with solid frosty banded agates and most of
the thundereggs are hollow and lined with gray
chalcedony. An interesting find is one lined with neon
green chalcedony and I couldn't find out what kind of
neon green mineral impurity that gave them strong neon
green color (no one bothered to have them be analyzed).
The agates are generally clear sometimes with frosty
banding. Apparently, the Hidden Saddle bed are related
to the Straw and Black Hill beds (maybe same lava flow
that had been normal-faulted).
