The Moctezuma agates are well known for their wide variety of pastel colors sometimes in contrasting color combos. The Moctezuma agates are one of  few agates I know of that can have green color (agates with bold blue & green color don't exist). The typical colors would be colorless, white, ivory, yellow and orange while red to pink colors (beside green) seems to be scarce. I noticed that almost all Moctezuma agates have this outer opaque rim(first band/film), very useful in identifying the Moctezuma agates.  The interesting thing is that some nodules come in the shapes of cigars/tubes, hence, one can get many stabs of same size, shape and color (not always) from cutting such "cigar-like" nodules. I consider the Moctezuma Agates to be my favorite Mexican Agate. I found one slab of Moztuzuma with Iris (rainbow) effect and did find the small hints of Iris in some other Moztezuma agates.
    The story was that the area used to be completely covered with agates that the Mexicans can easily pick up and that would explain why the Moctezuma agates are somewhat abundant in old lapidary stocks from 1950s-70s digging, but it had been a long time since the last time they were mined. Small Moctezuma agates still can be encountered from time to time. It must be kept in mind is that best agates as seen in the books take up less than 1% of the rough lot. .
