The agates from the Juchem Quarry near Idar-Oberstien would be the most commonly encountered of any German agates. The quarry that produced agates are still active from time to time and sometimes, the collectors would have an opportunity to collect at the quarry during the inactive periods. I find it interesting to learn that the agates are found in the upper parts of the quarry (a good clue to the geology behind the agate formation). The types of agates found in the quarry are not quite constant. One side would produce white to creamy agates sometimes with pinkish hues while other side would produce the weathered orangish agates that tend to be heavily fractured/crumbly (I wonder if that's right next to a fault or a result of weathering?).
