Mendip Hills (Dulcote) Agates
Mendip Hills, Dulcote, England, United Kingdom
.
The Mendip Hills Agates were obtained as a byproduct of limestone quarrying in 1970s where they had to remove a thick layer of reddish clay layers containing the agate nodules to get to the limestone. The most unusual feature of those concretion-type nodules is that the nodules contain the interlaying of agate and calcite. It was said that the quarry have been back-filled with refuse, so it's very likely any more calcite/agates from that location are no longer available. The color of agate is almost always reddish-orange with rare cases of tinted with purple colors. It seems to me that it may be also unfortunate that so many of such agate nodules have been slabbed up that it's hard to find whole halves let alone whole nodules.

has some scratches in the center. I can't polish those kind of agates due to too much calcite in them.
