Janos Agates ("Rainbow Agate"), thunderegg type.
Janos, Chihuahua Province, Mexico
.
They are sometimes called "Rainbow" Agates, but I chose to go with "Janos Agates" to avoid any confusion with several types of Brazilian and Japanese Agates passed as "Rainbow Agates". The Janos Agatese are actually a form of thundereggs that tend to contain narrow crescentlike agate filled cores on the upper part of any large thundereggs. The miners tend to break those large thundereggs apart to get at the agate cores, resulting in many of agate cores being fractured and suitable largely for cabbing. So it is difficult to obtain whole halves since many Janos agates I obtained have clipped parts (to expose agate). Those with strong colors or sharp banding are relatively rare, and same goes for those with larger agate cores too. Typical colors are dull brown, orange and yellow colors while red and purple colors are rare, and there have been some finds with brighter and more colorful Laguna-like bandings.

All specimens are cut from broken pieces, and most specimens contain some degree of fractures.
