After having obtained a large old-stock agate rough collection, I had some
frustrations with trying to identify the agate roughs since they were not
labelled (I didn't know much about agates at first). After a lot of research,
visiting old rock shops, and asking people), I decided to set this section
up to help those having similar troubles with their rough collections.
So here's some info on the agate roughs, but keep in mind is that what
is listed here is all I have, and I have some agates that are unknown to
me.
Also take care in identifying any agate roughs, it can happen that some agate roughs from two different locations to look similar. A good example is that the Red Hot thundereggs from Mexico and French thundereggs look very similar with similar agate colors. -Are the agate roughs in round / almondlike / oval / potatolike forms: They may be amygdaloidal type agates: . [Apach].[Aperajos].[Aqua
Nueva].[Botswana].[Brazilian].
[Malawi].[Moctezuma].[Morocco].[Parcelas].[Queenland].[WaveHill]. -Are the agate roughs in form of bubbly/caulflowerlike
forms with ridges? They may be thundergg type roughs..
-Are the agate roughs in form of chalky/cherty/enlarged fossil-like (sometimes bumpy) nodules? They may be concretion roughs. ..[Dryhead]..[Kentucky Agate]..[Union Road].-Do the pieces look very water-worn, rounded or naturally polished? ..[Lake Superior]..[Kentucky Agate]..[YellowSkin] -Other Forms (Lace, broken clunks, fossil shapes, irregular shapes, etc..) |
