Iron City (Empire) Datolites
Iron City (Empire) Mine, Copper Harbor, Keweenaw CO., Michigan
Field-collecting Status:  Enter at your own risk and avoid going thru the red gate.

.    The Empire Mine also known as Iron City Mine is apparently private owned even people are still visiting it via Burma road. It appeared that the piles had been searched several times and several 5-gal buckets of datolites were brought out even I heard that there had been a case of illegal bulldozing. That would explain why I'm seeing so many datolites from that mine lately before they disappeared (bought by collectors) and that later caused problems for Copper Country Club.  Most datolites contain weak tan colors with some faint zoning. Few came with brighter orange colors and some with zig-zagging orange fibers in the tan hued white color. The mine is also one of few locations where larger datolites can be found. I was able to visit the piles there and whoever did the bulldozing was quite through with the piles that it's difficult to find anything. I was surprised to find a datolite there.
