Althrough, they are a quarter mile apart,
Tavenier Mine shares the same layered rhyolitc lava strat as more famous
Baker Egg Mine, but the differences are that the Tavenier Mine produced
more "waterline" agates and darker colors than the Baker eggs. The presence
of "waterline" agates indicted that the Tavenier Mine had undergone wetter
conditions than that of Baker Egg which are lacking in "waterlines" agates.
The colors of many Tavenier thundereggs resemble the burning embers (black,
white and red/orange) and the "waterlines" thundereggs containing a color
combo of red, black and white are considered a classic. They can be found
in the "pink pits", but since the decomposing pertile host is full of duds
that it would take a full day of digging to get few pounds of "fat" thundereggs
just like the Baker Egg Mine that has to be backhoed to find the quality
thundereggs.
The mine was opened by Mr. Tavenier hoping to profit from selling the thundereggs he mine (and charging fees for collecting on his mines), but his hopes went down the deep mine shaft when the "Mexican Coconuts" became widely available at very cheap prices as well as the fact that he raelized that he opened a mine on a State land resulting in excessive costs warranting the abandonment of the mine. The mine is open to rockhounders and they are asked not to litter and cover any holes they dig. |
All specimens are found by Jeffrey A.
