Richardson Ranch Thundereggs
Moss & Plume Beds of Richardson Ranch,
Madras, Jefferson Co., Oregon
.
The Pridey(Blue) Beds, Red Beds, Pony Butte, and Plume Beds now owned by Richardsons are one of most well-known thunderegg sites for many decades and it happens that the thundereggs are made the State Rock of Oregon. They may be most common encountered and most studied thundereggs anywhere, but even so and as expected of any agates and thundereggs, great pieces seem to be rare. The best specimens from Moss Beds would show curtains of strong pink to red filaments in the clear agates. I do not know if the Moss Bed is still open to collecting and there's a Plume Bed where some of best colorful Plumes had been found in 1960s, but that bed is still closed to collecting too.

Rough Appearance:  Thundereggs look like they had been compressed, broken areas showing mossy agates.
Most thundereggs seem to contain dark colored moss agate, those with pink to red moss agate are more desired.
I do not know if any plume agates can be found in the same Moss Beds.

This is dark colored moss agate thunderegg that is most commonly encountered.

What a great cut! Swirls of pink moss Typical red moss thundereggs.

Rare Plume type, said to were available only in 1960s diggings
but the Plume Bed is still there, closed to collecting for now.
