Dwarves' Earth Treasures Museum:
Black Hills Thundereggs
Wiley Well District, south of Bythne, California
The Black Hills Beds is one of several long known sites that had been explored for many decades and I'm actually referring to the original "Black Hills" site not Paul Calburn's "Black Agate Mine" which is to the west. There were many diggings around, but even so, I still find nice thundereggs there and it was funny that my first thundergg find was just when I stuck a pointy end of a hammer into a weathered tan pertile beds and, by chance, pulled a thunderegg out of its host. The thundereggs are mostly thick-shelled with clear to black agate centers, usually with "waterline" features. Some thundereggs can be found with eye-catching black and white "waterline" agates and sometimes large thundereggs (some are too big for me!) can be found by being serious with digging deeper than usual. Don't expect to get anything good out of the larger thundereggs. When I visit there, I'm looking for those with solid agate cores, not geodic types.
