Baker Egg Thundereggs Collected by JeffreyA.
during March 2008 Mining Expedition.
Baker Egg Mine, Hermanas, Luna Co., New Mexico
.
The mining of Baker Egg mine resumed with the scrapping of "golf-ball" strata overlaying the egg-bearing stratum which occasionally turn up large geodes and some are amethyst. Few days later, the work is resumed on the stratrum itself but there had been some setbacks that delayed the mining efforts for a couple of days. Dale, the operator of the backhoe suffered a heart attack, but he recovered two days later and was not allowed to work at the mine. It took a while to find another backhoe operator before the mining could be resumed. During that time, we probed many spots along the walls of the Baker Egg Mine to check for any potential eggs especially those containing agates. With what we learned from our exploration, the mining resumed on two spots along one side of the walls. It seems that we're getting more geodes, collapsed eggs and zeolite-filled hollow eggs than before, but we were still getting the agates but not as much as before. I think that there are still more agate-filled thundereggs waiting to be extracted in the next mining expeditions.
Typical colors, but very nice. Uncommon yellow to red colors with strong shadowing effect
