Botswana Agates tend to be
considered a favorite of the general rock collectors because of their sharp
constrasting white, gray and black bands as well as their shadowing effects.
White, black and gray are typcial colors, and some agates have been found
with the colors of lavendar, purple, red and yellow. Orange and golden
colors are somewhat rare and there are some more pink to white agates as
result of weathering ("bleaching"). They commonly come in small sizes (an
once to half-pound), but some larger ones have been found.
The agates in Botswana were said to had been mined in great quantities in 1970s, but now because of Botswana's recent independance, the embargo had been placed on all raw material exports. Only processed materials (beads, tumble-polished, cabs, etc.) can be exported. Despite the embargo, the botswana agates seem to be the most common encountered banded agates next to the Brazilian agates. |
