Dwarves' Earth Treasures Museum:
Botswana Agates
Bobanong, Botswana, Africa
.
Botswana Agates tend to be considered a favorite of the general rock collectors because of their sharp constrasting white, gray and black bands as well as their shadowing effects. White, black and gray are typcial colors, and some agates have been found with colors of lavendar, purple, orange,  red and yellow with latter colors being most rare. There are some pink to white agates found in  the same area as result of weathering ("bleaching"). It is common to see them in small sizes (an once to half-pound), but some larger do show up from time to time but they tend to be more fractured.
The agates in Botswana were said to had been mined in great quantities in 1970s, but now because of Botswana's recent independance, the embargo had been placed on all raw material exports. Only processed materials (beads, tumble-polished, cabs, etc.) can be exported. Despite the embargo, the botswana agates seem to be the most common encountered banded agates next to the Brazilian agates.
