Friend Ranch Thundereggs
Friend Ranch, Ashwood, Oregon
Note: The owner of Friend Ranch died Jan 2009 so the ranch is closed to collecting for now.

The Friend Ranch was a fee-basis rockhounding site that was recently closed.  The thundereggs found there has very rough and prickly appearance making them not quite look like the typical thundereggs of Oregon!  The "prickles" are the stretched porphyic feldspar crystals sticking out of the thundereggs which the feldspar crystals formed in the magma first before it erupted. The crystals were preserved by the growth of cristobalite forming the thundereggs as the rhyolitic-pertilic lava have cooled.
The thundereggs contain at least two different types of agates. It's more common to find those with colorless agates sometimes with black and yellow swirls while others contain more desired color combo of blue, black and rarely red that are not restricted to the bands. Sometimes, the distribution of colors can produce the apparition patterns reminding of any objects like faces, ghosts, animals, whatever.
