Torpedo Beds Thundereggs Baker Ranch, Hermanas, Luna CO., New Mexico |
![]() |
The name
"Torpedo Beds" was referred by Paul "GeodeKid"
Calhoun to the torpedo/cigar-like shape of the
thundereggs. The site was originally
opened by a mineral dealer in search for scepter
quartz crystals (I found one) but was abandoned
due to high expense of running a mine/claim on a
state land as I have learned recently.
The thundereggs from the Torpedo Beds are mostly quartz(sometimes amethyst) lined geodes while agate cores are quite small. A small percentage of thundereggs contain what may be most colorful agates ever found in New Mexico (if not North America), even rivaling those of Baker Eggs and Mexican agates. Pete Ghitney made an mining attempt to obtain the agates and he left behind an unfilled hole on the right side of the road. Following local rockhounders' tips, I had some fun screening out the old piles left behind the commercial miners. Unfortunately, I later learned that it's located on state land instead of BLM as I was led to believe (even now-outdated rockhounding NM books didn't mention that) so I had to stop visiting that place. With that lesson in mind, I'd advise anyone to please leave that area alone. The specimens from that location may be still obtained from some local rock shops. Site Status: As of Jan 2022, it's on state land, so it's best to leave that area alone. |
