The agates were
originally found in the glacial deposits and river
shorelines near Ellensburg and apparently, the light-blue
agates (or "blue chalcedony") sough by collectors are hard
to find/obtain. Recently, the basalt beds to the north of
Ellensburg are being prospected for the sources of the
said agates and a few claims were made. The thundereggs
with "Angel Wing" chalcedony structures had been recently
discovered in that area.
It must be cautioned that there are
other similar "blue chalcedony" agates from other
localities like Mexico that can be passed as Ellensburg
agates.
